DAMP SURVEYOR PEMBROKE

Historic buildings need
building-specific advice.

Pembroke has a particularly varied building stock, from historic properties within the old town to traditional terraces, Georgian and Victorian houses and later residential development.

The historic town developed along a limestone ridge and retains a strong concentration of traditional buildings. Older properties can incorporate solid masonry, stone construction and rendered finishes whose moisture behaviour differs considerably from modern cavity-wall construction.

Historic buildings may also have undergone successive alterations over many decades. Later renders, plasters, floors, insulation, extensions and changes to external ground levels can all influence how moisture enters, moves through and evaporates from the building fabric.

Our approach is therefore to investigate the building as a whole, rather than diagnose a property from a single damp-meter reading or automatically prescribe a damp-proofing treatment.

SURVEYING IN PEMBROKE

What we consider
when investigating damp.

Damp is a symptom. The purpose of the survey is to understand the mechanisms and building conditions capable of producing it.

01

Traditional Stone Walls

Older stone and solid masonry construction can absorb, redistribute and release moisture differently from modern cavity walls. Wall construction and materials are considered when interpreting the evidence.

02

Historic & Terraced Properties

Traditional terraces and older town houses may contain complex junctions, shared walls, chimney breasts and historic alterations that need to be considered as part of the moisture investigation.

03

Ground Levels & Drainage

External levels, wall bases, drainage arrangements and possible moisture bridging are assessed where accessible rather than assuming low-level moisture automatically represents rising damp.

04

Modern Alterations

Later cementitious renders, plasters, insulation, floors and other alterations can change how an older building manages and releases moisture.

05

Ventilation & Condensation

Internal humidity, ventilation, heating, temperature and surface conditions are considered where condensation or mould may form part of the moisture problem.

06

External Defects

Roofs, chimneys, gutters, downpipes, walls, windows, render and other accessible external details are considered where defects may be contributing to moisture ingress.

WHY CHOOSE AN INDEPENDENT DAMP SURVEY?

The diagnosis shouldn't
depend on selling a treatment.

DF Damp Consultancy is a surveying consultancy. We do not carry out damp-proofing or remedial building works.

That distinction matters. Our income does not depend on recommending chemical damp-proof courses, tanking, waterproofing systems, replastering or other remedial treatments.

We can therefore assess the available evidence and recommend what we consider appropriate for the property. Sometimes repair is necessary. Sometimes further investigation or monitoring is more appropriate than immediate treatment.
