a building-led approach.
Aberaeron has a distinctive historic townscape containing many traditional buildings alongside later residential development around the town.
Traditional properties may contain solid masonry walls constructed using natural materials such as stone and lime. These buildings manage moisture differently from modern cavity-wall construction and need to be assessed with their original construction in mind.
Later alterations such as dense cement render, gypsum plaster, impermeable coatings, replacement floors and inappropriate insulation can alter the way traditional walls absorb, retain and release moisture.
Aberaeron's exposed coastal and harbour setting also makes weather exposure an important consideration. Wind-driven rain, defective external finishes, roof and chimney defects, rainwater goods and vulnerable openings can all contribute to moisture entering the building fabric.
