DAMP SURVEYOR CILGERRAN

Historic valley properties need
a building-led approach.

Cilgerran is a historic Pembrokeshire village set above the Teifi, with a distinctive landscape of steep valley sides, woodland and traditional settlement around Cilgerran Castle.

The combination of sloping ground, wooded surroundings, rainfall and older building stock means moisture problems should be assessed in relation to the wider building and its immediate environment rather than interpreted from internal symptoms alone.

Traditional masonry buildings may rely on the ability of walls to absorb and release moisture. Later cement renders, dense pointing, impermeable coatings or internal dry-lining can alter that behaviour and may contribute to retained moisture or concealed deterioration.

Steep local ground conditions can also make external levels, retaining conditions, drainage and lateral moisture particularly relevant where dampness occurs against walls adjoining higher ground.

Our approach is to investigate the building as a whole rather than diagnose dampness from a single moisture-meter reading.

SURVEYING IN CILGERRAN

What we consider
when investigating damp.

Damp is the symptom. The purpose of the survey is to identify the building conditions and moisture mechanisms capable of producing it.

01

Traditional Masonry

Older solid walls and traditional construction require assessment of how moisture enters, moves through and evaporates from the building fabric.

02

Sloping Ground & Lateral Moisture

Cilgerran's steep valley setting means adjoining ground levels, retaining conditions and lateral moisture can be particularly relevant to lower walls.

03

Drainage & Surface Water

Ground gradients, drainage routes and surface-water management are considered where moisture may be concentrating against or beneath the building.

04

Roofs & Rainwater Goods

Roof coverings, chimneys, gutters, valleys and downpipes are considered where defects may allow rainwater to penetrate or saturate external walls.

05

Ventilation & Condensation

Internal humidity, heating, ventilation and colder surfaces are assessed where condensation or mould may contribute to dampness.

06

Timber & Floor Voids

Suspended floors, sub-floor ventilation and concealed timber elements are considered where prolonged moisture may increase the risk of timber deterioration.

WHY INDEPENDENCE MATTERS

We investigate the cause.
We don't sell the treatment.

DF Damp Consultancy is an independent surveying consultancy.

We do not install chemical damp-proof courses, sell waterproofing systems, undertake tanking or carry out remedial building works.

Our recommendations are therefore based on the evidence identified during the survey rather than the opportunity to sell a subsequent treatment contract.

Where repair is justified, we explain why. Where further investigation, drying or monitoring is more appropriate than immediate treatment, we can recommend that instead.
