Understanding moisture in
Cowbridge properties.
Cowbridge has a distinctive building stock shaped by centuries of development, combining historic town-centre properties and traditional houses with later residential development around the established town.
Historic buildings within Cowbridge are commonly associated with local stone, slate roofing, rendered finishes and traditional window and door details. Solid masonry walls and traditional materials behave differently from modern cavity-wall construction and need to be assessed accordingly when dampness is present.
Later alterations can be particularly important. Cement-rich pointing, dense renders, gypsum finishes, replacement floors, internal linings and modern insulation can alter the way an older wall manages moisture and may restrict evaporation from traditional masonry.
Roof coverings, chimney stacks, flashings, rainwater goods and external ground levels are also important considerations. Localised defects in these areas can introduce moisture that may subsequently be mistaken for a problem requiring specialist damp-proofing treatment.

Traditional Stone Buildings
Historic properties may incorporate solid local stone walls, traditional mortars and permeable finishes that manage moisture differently from modern cavity-wall construction.
Finishes & Breathability
Cement-rich pointing, dense render, gypsum plaster and modern coatings are considered where later materials may restrict drying or alter moisture movement through traditional masonry.
Historic Alterations
Replacement floors, internal linings, extensions, altered openings and insulation are considered where successive changes may have affected the performance of the original building fabric.
Roofs & Chimneys
Slate coverings, ridges, chimney stacks, flashings, valleys and abutments are assessed where deterioration or defective detailing may provide a pathway for rainfall into the structure.
Ground & Drainage
Paths, paving, external ground levels, gutters, downpipes and drainage arrangements are considered where moisture is concentrated around lower walls or adjacent to the building.
Ventilation & Timber
Internal humidity, extract ventilation, suspended floors, sub-floor airflow and accessible structural timber are considered where prolonged moisture may contribute to mould or timber decay.
