Traditional and modern properties need
a building-led approach.
Lampeter contains a varied building stock, from traditional properties within and around its historic centre to later residential development extending across the town.
Many older properties were constructed before modern cavity-wall construction became commonplace and may contain solid masonry walls built using natural materials such as stone and lime. These buildings manage moisture differently from modern construction.
Subsequent alterations can significantly change that behaviour. Dense cement render, gypsum plaster, impermeable coatings, replacement floors and some insulation systems can restrict evaporation or alter moisture movement through traditional building fabric.
External ground levels, rainwater disposal and drainage also require consideration. Where water is concentrated close to walls, or external levels have been raised over time, moisture loading to the lower building fabric can increase.
