Understanding moisture in
rural Ceredigion properties.
Llanilar and the surrounding countryside contain a varied mix of traditional buildings, later housing and rural properties where moisture needs to be considered in the context of the individual building and its setting.

Traditional Masonry
Older solid masonry walls are assessed in relation to their construction, finishes and ability to absorb, redistribute and release moisture.
Weather Exposure
Exposed elevations are considered where wind-driven rain and repeated weathering may contribute to moisture penetration through defective masonry, render or openings.
Ground Levels
Sloping sites, raised ground and the relationship between external surfaces and the building are assessed where moisture is concentrated around lower walls.
Rainwater Disposal
Roof drainage, gutters, downpipes, gullies and discharge arrangements are considered where leakage or overflow may repeatedly saturate external masonry.
Later Alterations
Cement render, modern plaster, replacement floors, coatings and insulation are considered where changes may have altered the moisture behaviour of older construction.
Timber & Floor Voids
Suspended floors, sub-floor ventilation and accessible structural timber are considered where prolonged moisture may increase the potential for timber deterioration.
