Rural buildings need
a whole-building approach.
Meidrim and the surrounding countryside contain a mixture of village housing, traditional rural properties and later residential development, requiring moisture to be considered in the context of each individual building.
Older properties may incorporate solid masonry walls, suspended timber floors and traditional materials that manage moisture differently from modern cavity-wall construction.
Later alterations can significantly affect this behaviour. Cement render, dense pointing, impermeable coatings, dry-lining and replacement floors can reduce evaporation or alter the route by which moisture moves through older building fabric.

Solid walls and older construction are considered according to their materials, finishes and ability to absorb, redistribute and release moisture.
Ground & Topography
Sloping sites, adjoining land, external levels and retaining conditions are considered where they may increase moisture loading to lower walls.
Drainage & Surface Water
Gutters, downpipes, gullies, paving and surface-water routes are assessed where water may be accumulating or discharging close to the building.
Weather Exposure
External masonry, render, pointing, openings and roof junctions are assessed where exposed elevations may be vulnerable to wind-driven rain.
Later Alterations
Cement render, dense pointing, modern coatings, dry-lining and replacement floors are considered where they may restrict drying or change moisture behaviour.
Timber & Ventilation
Suspended floors, concealed timbers, sub-floor ventilation and internal humidity are considered where prolonged moisture could contribute to timber deterioration or mould growth.

We do not install chemical damp-proof courses, sell waterproofing systems, undertake tanking or carry out remedial building works.
Our recommendations are therefore based on the evidence identified during the survey rather than the opportunity to sell a subsequent treatment contract.
This is particularly important with older buildings, where an inappropriate damp-proofing treatment may fail to address the actual moisture source and can interfere with the way traditional construction manages moisture.
